Kyocera Wireless Corp. Receives 2003 Recycler of the Year Award
from City of San Diego
SAN DIEGO - July 28, 2003 - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones, today announced that it has received the "2003 Recycler of the Year Award," the City of San Diego's most prestigious environmental award for businesses that have shown significant recycling and waste-reduction efforts.
Kyocera Wireless Corp. received the award for continually striving to minimize environmental impact from business operations by increasing employee recycling awareness throughout the company. In 2002 Kyocera diverted more than 60 percent of paper, plastic, electronic and other wastes, diverting 1,058 tons from landfills. These recycling efforts avoided $2.4 million in disposal costs, with much of this being saved through a used phone battery refurbishment program.
The criteria upon which San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy's Environmental Committee judges potential award recipients include an evaluation of recycling programs, improvement over previous recycling efforts, specific programs tailored to the company's industrial niche, overall achievements and calculable results.
"Kyocera is committed to the preservation of the environment, so to be recognized for our efforts in this area is truly an honor," said Skip Speaks, president and chief executive officer of Kyocera Wireless Corp. "It is important that all companies, no matter their size, take the initiative to implement strong environmental programs in order to make a difference locally and globally."
Kyocera America Inc., a designer and manufacturer of electronic packaging solutions and sister company of Kyocera Wireless Corp., also received a "Director's Recycling Award" from the City, the second highest award given to companies for their waste reduction and diversion efforts.
